Do you even self-care, bro?

Self-care, what is it? And why should I even care?

Or maybe you’ve already heard about self-care and its importance, but you’re not about bubble baths and bottles of wine.

Let’s start at the beginning and define self-care. The quick and dirty way to describe self-care is, it’s what you do to keep from losing your shit. There are also different words people have used when describing what they do to take care of themselves. Some of you may have heard it described as coping skills or even stress management. Regardless of the name you call it, you need it!

Self-care is how you ensure you can continue on in a healthy manner.

​Self-care improves your relationships. Not just with others, but with yourself too. When you have taken care of your own needs, you have more energy for others. Self-care increases confidence and self-esteem. Self-care can also help you recognize boundaries which can decrease conflict or discomfort with others. 
​
Self-care has some amazing benefits, especially making you more productive while also experiencing less burnout. This is because you have taken the time you need to recharge. You can complete responsibilities faster and feel more accomplished.

Self-care does include a healthcare side too. This is often forgotten in the self-care world of bubble baths and spa days. You can provide your own healthcare by educating yourself on different medical topics. The benefit to knowing how to care for yourself and when to involve a professional can keep healthcare and insurance costs down, improve the likelihood a minor illness will not be spread, and most of all, save you time!
The best topics to learn to increase your medical self-care knowledge and practice are:
  • Fever ranges
  • The symptoms and differences between cold, coughs, and flu's
  • The difference between an Emergency Room, Urgent Care, and Primary Care and when to use them
  • Home remedies for minor illnesses
  • Minor wound care
  • What to keep on hand in your medicine cabinet
  • Usage and dosage for over the counter drugs
Taking time to learn some of these medical self-care skills can also help prevent midnight panics when you start to WebMD your symptoms. ​
